Centrica plc, a British multinational energy and services provider, is the largest supplier of gas and electricity to domestic customers in the UK, with 20,000 employees and 7,000 engineers serving over 10.3 million customers. Centrica needed to clear redundant equipment from two warehouses at their Leicester site. The goal was to clear the space quickly, achieve 100% recycling with zero landfill, and prepare the site to receive 3,000 pallets of materials, ultimately generating significant savings on external storage costs.

Client's Requirements

Centrica required a comprehensive clearance solution for two warehouses within a strict two-week deadline. All equipment needed to be recycled with zero waste going to landfill. After clearance, the warehouses would be repurposed to store 3,000 pallets of materials previously housed off-site, allowing for a significant cost reduction.

The Move: Multiple warehouse clearance and occupation

Moved From: Aylestone Road, Leicester

Number of Phases:

Key Concerns: Sorting mixed items in a short timeframe while ensuring 100% recycling and zero landfill, and managing the intake of up to six articulated lorries per day with palletised materials.

 Bishop's Move Solution

Bishop's Move provided a full suite of services to meet Centrica’s requirements, including project and move management. A team was assigned to oversee the work on-site and attend planning meetings to ensure that all requirements were met. The project took place over four weeks and involved:

  • Racking dismantling to clear space for incoming pallets.
  • Bishop's Move supplied forklifts and trained drivers for 40 days.
  • Building clearance and occupation: Bishop's Move dedicated a team to complete the building clearance and manage the reoccupation over a four-week period.
  • Specialist equipment handling: Support from electricians and plumbers was provided to decommission and disconnect equipment, while heavy lifting teams handled oversized machinery.
  • Recycling efforts: Approximately 110 tonnes of materials were recycled, ensuring that no waste was sent to landfill.

Key Outcomes

Bishop’s Move successfully cleared the warehouses, sorted all items for recycling, and prepared the space for re-occupation. The client’s strict deadline was met, and Centrica was able to achieve its sustainability goals, ensuring 100% recycling and no landfill usage.
