How to Move Abroad from the UK?

Moving abroad is an exciting yet challenging experience, whether you're relocating for work, family, or a fresh start. As you prepare to leave the UK and embark on this new chapter, it's essential to have a well-organised plan in place. With countless details to consider, from legal paperwork to packing up your home, a comprehensive checklist can make all the difference.

Discover essential tips to navigate the complexities of moving abroad with confidence and ease.

1. Research the country you’re moving to

The most important starting point when looking to move abroad is researching the country of your choice. From tax systems to climate and culture, there are plenty of aspects to consider, all of which can give you a glimpse of what it’s like to live there.

2. Contact relevant offices

If you're moving or retiring abroad make sure you tell the relevant government offices that deal with your benefits, pension & tax.

  • Inform your local council and provide them with a forwarding address.
  • Check if you can continue to receive benefits.
  • Find out how to claim your pension if you retire abroad.
  • Inform HM Revenues & Customs (HMRC).

3. Sort out permits and visas

Visas can sometimes take a long time to procure, depending on which country you are relocating to. So make sure you allow enough time for this before you move as it may delay the importation process.

Stay informed on entry requirements by checking out the official government website of the country. Make sure your passport is up-to-date and has a sufficient amount of time left.

4. Transfer funds

Sorting out overseas finance is an integral part of moving abroad. To maintain your credit score, you should keep your current bank account. Make sure you’ve paid any outstanding bills, and inform your bank and credit card company of the move.

Depending on requirements, you may or may not be able to open a bank account in your destination country before your move. Additionally, you can also have an offshore account to manage your finances while abroad.

5. Calculate your moving costs

Shipping costs will make up a substantial part of your relocation expenses. Preparing an inventory for household items, as well as researching international moving companies can prevent costs from spiralling out of control.

6. Secure accommodation

Finding somewhere to live is one of the most exciting aspects of moving abroad. From picking the city of your choice to saying ‘yes’ to your first home, sorting overseas accommodation adds an element of fun to the moving process. Whether you’re looking to retire on a sunny coast or prefer a mountain cabin for more outdoor activities, research and weigh your options.

7. Sort out healthcare

Healthcare systems can vary significantly across the world, and making sure you’re able to access them when needed is crucial. You should also contact your current healthcare provider and check for overseas coverage. Take any necessary vaccines before moving, and check if prescribed medications are permitted in the destination country.

8. Collate essential documents

Having important documents on hand is vital when moving abroad. Passports, visas, rental and employment contracts are important, but you also need to think about additional paperwork such as an international driving licence and documentation for moving pets that you might need.

9. Prepare your family for the move

If you’re moving with your family, you need to make sure they’re ready for the big move. Besides the extra documentation required, you'll need to consider their future in your new environment. It's important to research potential employment for your partner and schooling for your children before finalising your move.

10. Connect with expats abroad

Moving abroad can seem daunting, but you're far from alone. Expats are typically some of the most supportive people you’ll encounter, often willing to share advice on handling local bureaucracy and endorsing reliable lawyers, accountants, and other crucial services you may need.

Social media is a good way of keeping in touch with your community, both at home and abroad.
