In March 2020, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to healthcare facilities across the UK. Faced with the urgent need to restructure and reorganise existing facilities to create additional bed spaces, The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust turned to Bishop’s Move for expert assistance in relocating vital departments and wards across their hospitals.

Project Scope

Bishop’s Move was appointed by The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, which includes Pontefract Hospital, Pinderfields Hospital, and Dewsbury and District Hospital in Wakefield, to manage a series of critical relocations. The scope of the project involved moving various departments and wards between local sites in Wakefield and Pontefract, including the Eye Hospital, the Elective Orthopaedic Suite at Pontefract Hospital, District Nurses, Telephony/Switchboard services, and the Stanley Hall Building.

The Move

Detailed Project Execution

The hospital relocation process was extensive, involving the movement of over 150 beds, as well as all associated furniture, clinical equipment, and IT systems for staff. Bishop’s Move also relocated the contents of 40 counseling suites, assessment units, and ward areas. This massive undertaking was completed within a 30-day timeframe, ensuring that the hospital could continue to operate smoothly despite the ongoing pandemic.

Bishop’s Move’s Project Director, Stuart Philp, played a crucial role in the success of the operation. He oversaw the initial planning and preparation, ensuring that every detail was meticulously arranged. Stuart also managed the on-site teams, ensuring that all moves were completed efficiently and safely, with minimal disruption to hospital staff and patients. Following the successful completion of the initial relocations, Bishop’s Move has continued to work with The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. They have completed an additional 12-15 individual moves for various elements within the Trust, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to supporting the NHS during these challenging times.
